Making a New Years’ Resolution is a common practice for most people. As we are closing one year, going into another, we reflect over the accomplishments as well as the shortcomings and make a resolution to do better the following year. A resolution is the act of making up your mind. So we countdown from 10 to one waiting for the clock to strike midnight. We celebrate and enter a new year with a new beginning. But there’s something missing here. We made an announcement, but we didn’t change our mindset.
Everything starts right there. It’s the way you think that determines your outcome. I can’t tell you how many New Years’ Resolutions I’d made year after year about losing weight. I finally came to the conclusion that I wouldn’t even attempt to tell myself the same lie anymore. That’s when the light bulb turned on. It was at that moment that I realized that the problem wasn’t with the resolution, the problem was with my mindset. I had made an announcement about what I planned to do, but my mind was not in on the plan.“Your life changes the moment you make a new, congruent and committed decision.” – Tony Robbins
Tony Robbins hit the nail on the head. The birthplace of real change is in your mind. It’s starts with a decision. I can be transparent and share that I failed to meet some of my goals in 2020. There were may contributing factors. No matter the factors, I had failed because I didn’t decide what to do in the event of unforeseen circumstances. 2020 was a challenging year for most of us. There was one life altering event after another. I learned a valuable lesson about preparation. There’s always going to be something that catches you off guard. The key to survival is to be prepared for whatever that something is. I knew all the right things to do in 2020, but my mind and emotions were not prepared for the chain of events and how they were going to affect me. This left me in a very awkward position that opened the door to some old habits, and threw a monkey wrench in some of the newer habits. The Pandemic caused a major disrupt. I was missing the farmers markets, the gym and many other things. This left me in a frenzy!
Now that I’ve had this experience, I have decided – Yes! “DECIDED”, to sift through my thoughts and find the lessons therein. I’ve made a decision that I would not allow the upsets in life to throw me off course ever again. I have found a back up plan for every area of my journey so I won’t find excuses and let the ball drop. 2021 is right here! I can’t cry over the milk I spilled in 2020 any longer. I am the one who has to make the decisions. I’m the one who has to recite the daily affirmations. I’m the one who has to plan and prepare. It’s all on me. I offer encouragement to anyone who feels that they failed to meet the health goals in 2020. Take a page out of my book and decide that in 2021 you will change your mindset and make great things happen. I made this check-list as a self accountability tool to help keep me aware. 2020 wasn’t all bad because we were able to quickly figure out how to work around the tough areas and keep life moving in a positive direction. If it were’t for the items on this list, I think I would have lost complete control. A great place to start is by putting reminders and tools in place that are realistic and easy to follow. All of us had to adjust in these areas. You never know what you’re capable of until you’re faced with an obstacle. Continue the following….
- Make sure you have back up stores for fresh fruits and vegetables
- Create and use a workout space at home with hand weights and online workout routines
- Follow the Eat Well Live Well Be Well guidelines by choosing a tract every month
- Beware of the holiday traps. Require yourself to consistently make good choices

- Stay connected to the community for support because we need each other
The beautiful thing about coming into a new year is that you get a chance to right some wrongs. We all have something that if we could go back and do it differently, we would. We can’t do anything about the past, but we can change the future. The Eat Well Live Well Be Well tribe has been extremely supportive. Not only to me, but to your own journey and to each other. Let’s knock down the barriers and walls in 2021 and continue the journey towards optimal health as we Take Our Lives BACK!
